Abstract: Considering what does and doesn’t work in cybersecurity is becoming simpler in the context of the many mass data breaches tied to credentials. An astounding 81 percent of data breaches are tied to lost or stolen credentials, with credential reuse attacks having a 2 percent success rate. With 3 billion user credentials stolen since 2016, millions of unaccounted-for credentials can still be leveraged for attacks on enterprises that have no connection to those breached. The 2 percent success rate poses a credible threat to all online services and their users, and puts large service providers into two categories — the breached and those yet to be. It also means enterprises with a strong security posture are only as secure as the Home Depot’s, LinkedIn’s, and Yahoo!’s of the world. Standout security solutions are ones that modernize identity and access management by adopting a true password-less architecture to address credential reuse habits and attacks.
